Making Screen Time Meaningful with The Outdoor School

-Miranda Crosby, Program Coordinator

In a world of constant screens, it is easy to find ourselves wrapped up in them. Mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, engaging in Facebook posts, watching 5 seasons of your favorite Netflix show in 2 days. This isn’t to say that this is a bad thing, it is the world we live in now and we must adapt to it. But what if we want this screen time to have more meaning in our lives?

When it comes to The Outdoor School our mission is “to use the outdoors to awaken ourselves and others to the potential within and around us.” Even then, we know that to stay relevant we must take things online and to social media. We want people to subscribe to our blog, engage in our Instagram and Facebook, and scroll through our website. So, how do we make screen time more meaningful? For us, we have created a series of mini teaching topics, we call “TOS minis”.

TOS Minis feature different topics we work on in our classes, as well as some fun things we can think about at home. For example, learn about gardening with Miss. Kate, or reptiles with Miss. Chole, as well as many more. Take a moment from scrolling through social media or watching that Netflix show and sit down by yourself, or with your family and learn a new skill or piece of information, whether that be through our TOS minis or finding a topic you are interested in and learning more about it.

But most importantly, don’t forget to take a step outside, even if it’s only for a moment, and connect to the world around you.

Find our TOS Mini’s here or through the “videos” tab on our website and be on the lookout for more topics posted throughout the spring!
