How long have your worked for TOS?
I started as an instructor in the Spring of 2010. I enjoyed it so much I stayed for 4 more seasons. 2 more as an instructor, then 2 as a Program Coordinator. In 2013 I came back for another stint as a program coordinator. In 2016 I was offered an opportunity to join the team full time, and I have been here ever since!
What is your Favorite TOS Class?
I am going to break the rules and name two, my favorite academic class that we offer is Reptiles. It allows students to get hands on with all of our resident reptiles, and dispels a lot of fears that students may have and they can then bring that new found knowledge back to their friends and family.
Another favorite of mine is our pirate ship ropes course. With 3 different levels and over 20 elements for the students to try, it allows them to challenge themselves at their own pace, and the views of lake LBJ can’t be beat.
Do you have a favorite TOS moment?
I have several! But the one that always sticks out to me is from back when I was an instructor. The school I was working with had just arrived and I was walking my team out to one of our classes that takes place in our wilderness area. There were a lot of grasshoppers jumping all over the place, and the students were genuinely freaked out at first. Here they were in a whole new setting with these insects leaping everywhere. Fast forward to the last night of the trip, and the students were now at home and comfortable doing a solo walk! It is so impressive how much students challenge themselves and grow while they are here at TOS.
